Samuel Taylor Saunders was my 2x great uncle. He died in Cape Town on 4 January 1902 of enteric fever, a type of typhoid, believed to have been caught while swimming in a flooded river.
He is buried in South Africa and commemorated on a plaque near the reception to St Helens Town Hall.
Below is the last letter he wrote to his mother just weeks before his death,
in which he mentions swimming in the river; followed by a memorial note, a list of his effects, the Town Hall plaque, and a record of his baptism.
